Incidence and Prevalence of Diabetes
About 21 million people in the United States have diabetes. Unfortunately, only about 14.6 million of them have been diagnosed with the disease. The others have not noticed any symptoms yet and do not realize that they have diabetes.
Since 1997, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes has increased considerably, rising from 5% of Americans to almost 7% today. An estimated 1.5 million new cases of diabetes in people age 20 and older were diagnosed in 2005, the most recent year for which statistics are available. In the United States, nearly 10% of adults age 20 and older have diabetes. A large numbermore than 10 millionare age 60 or older.
